Wayne Barrett

For five decades, Wayne Barrett has brought his forward-thinking and innovative approach to the discipline of architecture.

An early pioneer and adopter of green building design in the 1970’s, Wayne established his principles of form, function and building science from his education at Toronto Metropolitan University and McGill University.

Wayne has been responsible for a wide range of residential and commercial projects - from conceptual design to commissioning to execution - across the globe, earning acclaim across Canada, Mexico and Africa for his sustainable and energy-efficient designs.

Wayne co-founded Zippan + Barrett Architects - one of the first firms to use computers to design and augment buildings - in 1980, and went on to found Barrett Architect in 2001.

Wayne continues to share his wealth of design and construction experience as an instructor and guest lecturer domestically and abroad, and has served as a board director on numerous non-profit organizations.

Matthew Chong

Through his vast experience in the architecture, design, and hospitality sectors, Matthew Chong's primary focus has been bringing people together.

Joining Barrett Architect in 2012, Matthew has been instrumental in building a portfolio of national restaurant, single-family residential and heritage conversion design projects.

As a managing partner for Barrett Architect, Matthew leads the architectural, interior design and prime consultancy aspects of each project.

With a passion for hospitality design - as evidenced by his years of work operating restaurants and as a sommelier - Matthew aims to harmoniously bridge the architecture and interior design worlds.

By incorporating sacred geometry and other universal styles of architecture theory into his work, Matthew is a driving force behind the return to a more human type of spacemaking.

Philip Scalena

A collaborator and member of the Barrett team since 1988 - rejoining in 2017 as a Partner - Philip Scalena brings passion and soul into every project.

With four decades of experience as a Registered Interior Designer and Architectural Technologist, Philip has extensive knowledge and expertise in hospitality, retail and residential design.

Working in different roles as Project Manager, Creative Director and Design Manager, Philip has led teams on a variety of global projects - from Dubai to Morocco to the Americas - ranging from hotels, casinos, shopping centres, big box retail/grocer to hospitality chains.

Taking a disciplined, strategic and marketing-based approach to interior design that encompasses value engineering and global perspective, Philip aims to create spaces that evoke pride and dignity at any size or price point.

Philip employs an experience mapping methodology in the design process for hospitality and retail, assuring that a guest’s experience aligns closely with the desired brand experience.

Philip holds management certificates from the University of Toronto and Humber Polytechnic - spending 15 years as a part-time instructor at the latter - and also served on the Sales and Marketing Committee for the OHBA.

Chris Barrett

Chris Barrett is a multifaceted, technologically-savvy professional, with vast experience information technology, computer aided design and 3D modeling.

Chris plays several key roles for Barrett, including collaborative design with project leaders, providing both process renderings and photorealistic conceptualization.

Chris is also primarily responsible for liaising with municipal building departments, regional planning departments. and other Authorities Having Jurisdiction for all local and national work.

In addition, Chris takes charge of the submission of building permit and planning applications to expedite approvals, ensuring that construction can begin as soon as possible.

Whatever challenge is presented, Chris provides rapid and efficient technical solutions to move projects forward.
